Got into the Vätternrundan but I’m out!

Morgan

SwedenPictureAfter months of waiting I was lucky enough to be given a start time for the Vätternrundan bike ride in Sweden. 300km in 24 hours, starting at 11.45pm and riding all night round a giant lake.

I got through the ballot, so it was time to look at flights & accommodation etc. Flight £200, ride entry £125, accommodation approx £60 a night.  ..  .a bit expensive but I gotta spend money to make money for next years Tahlia Banks Awards I suppose. Hooooooold on I thought to myself . ..  Is Sweden safe for a person with Black skin? Let me Google that real quickly before I book.

You what!!!!?? Sweden is the 3rd racist country in Europe!  Well, looks like I won’t be doing the ride anymore. There are no hotels in the area of the ride as everywhere is fully booked. So it would be an AirBnb thing – and I’m supposed to share a house with strangers in Europe’s 3rd most racist country? ‘Shut the front door!’

Europe’s most racist countries list goes like this:

  • 11th – Germany
  • 10th – Poland
  • 9th – Austria
  • 8th – Russia
  • 7th – Hungary
  • 6th – Ukraine
  • 5th – Denmark
  • 4th – Spain
  • 3rd – Sweeden

I thought to myself, I went to Poland to play a football tournament a few years back – and never experienced racism like that EVER in my life. People spitting at your feet, walking down the street and hearing people shout ‘Niggerrrrr’, monkey chants in bars, cars of guys suddenly stopping and lads jumping out on you, I even had people taking out phones and blatantly video you.

I remember the night after the tournament we went for a celebration meal and me and a guy were walking back to where we were staying. I saw about 7 white guys start pulling up there hoods and bouncing over towards us shouting and making hilter salutes. “Yo Marcus, it’s on – yu ready?” He replied, “Just keep ya head down and keep walking.” “Bruv, they’re coming – it’s On!, We can’t walk pass and hide the fact we black.” I remember getting ready to hold at least one of them and send them to their maker. If I’m going down, I taking at least one with me. Marcus started to run but I was not running anywhere!  I was tired after the tournament plus they would have chased us like dogs and killed us. I turned and walked towards them and shouted “Come on then!” (Must have been the Birmingham City fan in me!) and they backed off a little but started shouting things such as, “White Power”, “Black Bastards”, “Coolie”, “This is white land”, “Niggers” and a whole heap of  other things. Marcus had come back, he never got far, he saw I never ran and turned back, he couldn’t leave me. We took the abuse for about 10-15 minutes walking through the centre of the town as people watched.  An elderly man must have got woken by the noise, came out his house and came to our defence. I didn’t have a clue what he was saying,  but the tears in his eyes spoke a thousand words as he ran them.

Now – after my encounter with a country listed 10th in the list for racism, WHY am I going somewhere listed 3rd? – I’ll look for a ride in the UK or elsewhere.

Hooooooold on again!!!!!!!

I got to 3Rd place in the list of countries but where is the most racist country in Europe? The answer – Switzerland.

And a little something to think about – The second most racist place is  ….. The UK!
